The South Dakota Mesonet, operating out of South Dakota State University, seeks public and private landowners willing to host weather stations that are planned as part of a multi-state project that will improve moisture monitoring across the upper Missouri River Basin. At 96 stations and counting, we're reaching the planning deadline for the final stage of network expansion, which includes a station in each of Nobles, Pipestone and Rock Counties, as well as 3-4 stations in northwest Iowa. We've included our host recruiting map for reference as well as an aerial photo of our recruiting areas in Minnesota. Our goal is to find landowners willing to host us indefinitely, though the timeframe may be negotiable depending on circumstances.
In addition to temperature, humidity, barometric pressure, rainfall and wind, our stations monitor precipitation type, snow depth and liquid water equivalent, solar radiation, soil moisture and temperature, and thermal inversion.
Observations from these stations will be made available to the public and updated every five minutes at https://mesonet.sdstate.edu. Data collected by the SD Mesonet supports the US Drought Monitor, FSA aid payments, and is sent to the National Weather Service and the regional River Forecast Center. We also provide decision support tools for agricultural producers, helping them gauge conditions for pesticide application and livestock stress, among other things.
